OGITECH Convocation Lecture: Skill Acquisition is not Entrepreneurship – Prof. Edun

Many youths, the Academic community and Policy makers have been challenged not to confuse skill acquisition with entrepreneurship. This call was made by Prof. Taiwo Edun of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, who was the Guest Lecturer for the Convocation Lecture of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, which held on Monday, October 28th, 2019 at the Institute’s Multipurpose Hall.

In the paper titled Entrepreneurship versus Employ-ability and the 21st Century Labour Market Challenges for Nigerian Youths, Prof. Edun submitted that Entrepreneurship stretches far beyond apprenticeship or mere learning of a certain trade.

According to him, entrepreneurship involves self-discovery of one’s talent, figuring out how the talent key into a gap, backing this up by passion, getting skilled in alignment with the talent and infusing the necessary innovation that can push ideas through.

The Convocation Lecture which eventually turned out to be a mini strategy session of sort was articulately delivered by the Guest Lecturer attracting a standing ovation from all present.

Attendees did not mince words in expressing their pleasure with the content and delivery of the paper by the erudite Professor who displayed a very deep knowledge and vast experience in Entrepreneurial Development.

Responding to questions raised by attendees, Prof. Edun stated that there are no skill gaps in Nigeria, as Nigerians are very talented, highly skilled and blessed with great ideas, one reason why they excel all around the world. He noted that the system is what is killing ideas, and unless the nation truly operate as a Federation unit the way it should, and ideas nurtured through painstaking thoughts, more innovations will get rested before they even take off.

He further encouraged policy makers in the educational sector to infuse the town and gown approach into learning in tertiary institutions in which case individuals who have expertise in a certain field can be enlisted on the faculty list in relevant Departments. He gave examples of how Judges, the Police and practicing professionals in Law Enforcement can be brought in to lecture occasionally in, say, the Faculty of Law to rein in their wealth of experience, and teach students on real life situations and application of theoretical knowledge taught at school. He said such experts have very rich experience owed to their daily encounters in the line of duty, such that may not be found in any textbook on any school shelf. He noted that this will help in enhancing the curriculum for Entrepreneurship Development.

The Chairman of the Convocation Lecture, Vice Chancellor of Crawford University, Igbesa, Prof. Isaac Rotimi Ajayi, in his support for the paper delivered by Prof. Edun said that the overriding factor in Entrepreneurship is for the Nigerian youth to be able to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy.

The host of the event, Rector of the Institute, Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunke Akinkurolere, expressed appreciation for the strategic points made by the Guest Lecturer, the practicality of the solutions offered and the inspiration generated.

Chairman of the 3rd Convocation Committee, the Acting Dean of Students Affairs, Mr Oluyemi Odutola pointed out that the Lecture is the icing on the cake for all the graduating students, as it sums up the knowledge, skills and experiences they have gathered at OGITECH. He said he was assured that what has been invested by the Institute is enough to make the graduating students excel in their various fields of endeavour.
